I follow a lot of preparedness blogs, not because I think the world is going to end tomorrow and we need to hoard ALL OF THE CEREAL AND TOILET PAPER, but because I know things happen. Just last month here in Colorado we had a 1000 year flood from a regular old rain storm that just wouldn’t stop. It rained for weeks, flooding started after day 3. By day 5 cities were split in half by rivers, which were once just little streams. Some peoples houses washed away completely, others had flooded basements, living rooms, and damaged houses. Even people with no physical flood damage were without power for days, and some cities were completely cut off from Denver, where the food comes from.

As you can imagine grocery store shelves were empty. Cooking was impossible for a lot of families, and a lot of people were stuck with no food or clean water for days.

This isn’t some crazy prepper idea, this happened to my community. This is why I think it is so important to have emergency food set aside for at least 3 days (72 hours) so that you and your family have a fall back plan in-case something like this happens.

Now, if you follow a lot of the “prep” websites, you will find they focus a lot on junk food with a whole lot of gluten and calories, but with very little nutrition. As someone with Celiac disease and a person who tries to eat the best quality food available (read organic, GMO free, gluten free) I can’t really compromise on the food I keep on hand for a SHTF situation.

This is why I was so excited to come across this great e-publication for creating your own gluten free emergency kit.

She provides a shopping list of gluten free foods you can have on hand with a daily calorie goal of 1600 and 60 grams of protein per day. She recommends adding more food if you are a man, pregnant, breastfeeding etc. She provides both options for the “normal” gluten free person and the “whole food” loving gluten free crowd. She also provides a check list of other items you will want to have on hand like clothes, diapers and wipes, deodorant, toilet paper, and more.

This is definitely a great resource to have on hand to help you prepare for an emergency situation like a blizzard, flood, or any other emergency situation.

You can hear more from Katie, the author of the book, below.

Create Your Own Gluten Free 72 Hour Emergency Kit…..a money saving survival guide to gluten-free preparedness is here! Who needs an emergency kit you ask? Anyone who eats, that’s about all of us. But those of us with food allergies, sensitivities, and intolerance’s should really have one. More so than the average Joe. Here’s why…

Years ago I read this post and it terrified me because this woman who lost her son to the Joplin, MO tornado was also living off of gummy bears for a week. Not only was she grieving the loss of a child, but because of celiac disease and lack of availability of gluten-free food after the storm, the only thing safe for her to eat were gummy bears.
See I have two celiac children who were then 3 and 4. I could not fathom telling them that there was no food for them if a disaster were to occur. And it was very possible as we lived in Florida at the time. I didn’t let fear take over, I quickly sprung into action and made a gluten-free 72 hour kit.
Create Your Own Gluten Free 72 Hour Emergency Kit has been a work in progress for years. First as something our own family could use, tweaking as needed, to taste and preference. I’ve finally compiled my work into an easy to read guide. I get straight to the point in this 8 page book so there isn’t a lot of fluff to read through.

You can be putting your own kit together in hours, ready to take on anything nature throws at you.
