I love baby wearing. I really do. It simplifies my life to know that I can just throw my baby who must.be.held.all.the.time. onto my back (or front when they are tiny) and know that they will be happy because of their contact with mamma, and I can be happy because I can clean the house and make dinner without having to wait for my husband to get home.

One of the problems I have being a bigger mamma is that I am limited as to the carriers I can use, mostly because companies assume people wearing their children will be 120 lbs, fit, and active. I have found a few carriers that do fit my 260lb 5’7″ frame with large hips and large breasts, but have never found a wrap or sling that fits the bill, until recently.

Love to Wrap by Guin is owned by a friend of mine. She is a stay at home mom with a passion for baby wearing, sewing, and hand dying fabrics with natural, non toxic dyes. Her wraps are hand dyed and made from 100% linen fabric. They are made by hand, hemmed, and dyed in a smoke free, pet free, fragrance friendly home.

All wraps are hemmed on all 4 ends and are created with 12-14 inch tapers. Wraps are approximately 28 inches wide. If you are interested in a wider wrap that can be accommodated, just contact her for pricing.

She sent me a size 7 custom gradually dyed wrap to review. I got to chose the colors and have to say they came out beautifully. I told her what I wanted and she put the colors together that looked gorgeous.

My wrap in the making!

I am going to state for the record, the carrier I wear most is my Ergo. I like how it fits and it doesn’t hurt my back if I wear it for an hour or less. Just going to the grocery store wearing the ergo is no problem, but I am not able to wear it on a hike or wild crafting any more. My son is now 26lbs and has too much freedom of motion in the Ergo, which torks my back and causes lower back pain.

When I wear the wrap with my son on my back he is nice and snug up against me. I can bend down to harvest plants without straining my back, and we can hike for hours with no discomfort on my part.

Funny story: One Saturday my husband and I decided to go on a nice easy hike with the kids. I wanted to take some of my field guides with me to identify some new plants. We drove and drove to reach this perfect, easy, family friendly hike. On the way there I noticed a beautiful lake and decided I wanted to hike by it instead of the nice, easy, family friendly hike I found earlier that day. We drove around trying to find a place to park and ended up on the back side of the hill that borders the lake. There was a little 10 inch wide “trail” that you could see once you crossed the river… I mean stream. My husband wanted to turn back but it was beautiful and the forest was calling to me. I said “Don’t worry sweaty, there is a path, it will be fine.” We got out of the car, put the kids on our back, (my son in the wrap and my daughter in a kelty knock off), and crossed the stream by walking on slippery river rocks. We then took the tiny hiking path to a ravine that was washed out. We hiked up the wash, which kind of looked like a path, and found another path at the top. The hike wasn’t hard, but definitely not the easy stroll we had planned. I met a lot of plants along the way and was able to harvest an abundance of herbs. We hiked for about three hours before we found our way back to the car. At the end of the hike my husbands back was killing him and I was banned from ever following my heart on hikes again until the kids were able to walk. I on the other hand, the one with the bad back, felt fine. I was able to bend with no problems and did not need to lay still for three days to recover.

Now I am a believer in wraps, even for older kids.

I really love that this wrap is made with linen. It doesn’t really stretch much like a moby wrap does, which means when you are moving a lot the child stays firmly up against you. The wrap doesn’t loosen up enough to where you feel like the child is going to fall out at any second. I had that issue once my kids got to about 15lbs and had stopped using the Moby wrap after that because I didn’t feel secure using it. I feel very secure using this wrap with my 26lb 17 month old. I even put my 38lb three year old in it and it worked fine, but did hurt my back.

She sent me a size 7, which is the largest size she offers, to use. It fit around me just fine, although anyone who is taller than me, or has a more round belly than me may need to request a longer wrap.

I now keep the wrap in my car along with my ergo in case of wildcrafting or hiking emergency. I love it and use it often. It is definitely a great option for anyone who has a child who likes to be held constantly, or an herbalist who likes to go on long walks wildcrafting, but their back is less than happy about wearing baby in other carriers.
