Most naturally minded parents have heard all about amber teething necklaces and the claim that they help reduce teething pain and irritation. My kids both have amber teething necklaces and I never really could tell if they worked or not. When Spark of Amber contacted me to review one of their adult necklaces I jumped on the chance to see if I could tell a difference in my own body while wearing amber.

How does amber help reduce pain?

Amber from the Baltic region generally has up to 8% succinic acid, which, when touching the skin is said to be released onto the skin and absorbed into the body. This acid plays a very important role in a process called the krebs cycle, which is intrinsic to the working of the body at a cellular level. The claim is that the succinic acid helps reduce pain and inflammation in the body and is beneficial to the nervous system. You can read all about succinic acid, its history, benefits, and safety here.

Does it work?

No studies have been done to determine if Baltic amber is an effective pain killer, but you can find Baltic amber jewelry use going back to the stone age. It has been used historically over hundreds of centuries for various medicinal reasons.

This being said everyone has different body chemistry and some will say it works, while others say it doesn’t.

Spark of Amber sent me a beautiful Island Breeze necklace to try out. I have chronic back pain from an injury I got almost seven years ago. This pain has been finding its way into my shoulders with the addition of a lot of stress in my life so I have been suffering shoulder pain and headaches. While I have been managing my pain well with essential oils, it always returns. I really need a massage. This was a great opportunity to see if this beautiful Baltic amber necklace works on me, or if it was just a piece of beautiful bling.

This beauty is the Island Escape necklace. The overlapping amber pattern is lovely and goes well dressed up or down.

After wearing the necklace for a few hours I noticed that my head pain was starting to recede and the stitch in my neck wasn’t bugging me. That night I was tired at a normal hour, instead of my usual wide awake at midnight, and was able to fall asleep easily without taking melatonin. I continued to wear the necklace during the day for five days. Each day my neck and head felt better and my sleep patterns were great. On the sixth day I removed the necklace to see how I would feel. Around 10 am my neck and shoulders started getting tight again and my headache came back. I was up late at night and slept poorly.

I will also note I have a breast fed one year old who likes pulling on necklaces. Hard. The necklace withstood the test of my one and two and a half year old and gets an A+ for endurance.

So does it work? As far as I could tell it really helped me with my pain and stress levels. Was it a cure all? No. But it did help with pain management in a gentle yet effective way, which is what we all want right?

Spark of Amber

Spark of amber is a brand new company just getting into selling baltic amber necklaces. They contacted me to review one of their necklaces. At first I was going to say no since the kids both have teething necklaces, then I looked at their products. They carry teething necklaces and bracelets for children but also carry necklaces for adults. Not only that but the adult necklaces are beautiful! I am not a big jewelry person but I love the simple and down to earth designs they have. She makes beautiful nursing necklaces, pendants, earnings and other amber jewelry too!

After talking some more I learned that they source their amber differently from other companies. Spark of Amber decided not to source their amber from large companies with less-than-ethical ways of getting amber. Instead they work with several small suppliers that purchase from women, mothers who go out hunting for the very best amber. This amber is then tested for authenticity in a lab before being made into this beautiful fine jewelry.

They only ship in the United States and ship quickly so that mothers do not have to impatiently wait for weeks before getting their necklaces.

Shipping is always free and the prices are very fair when compared to other companies.

You can learn more about what sets Spark of Amber apart here. You can find pictures of their products on their Facebook page, which also has a store front, or on their web store here.

Spark of Amber is hosting a giveaway! You can win either a beautiful Island Breeze Necklace or a Teething Necklace and Bracelet. Your choice! The giveaway is only available to US residents.

Thank you for posting about amber. I have arthritis and lately my left elbow has been really painful and nothing seems to help. Last night after reading your post I dug out my amber necklace and put it on. Then I found my raw amber nugget beads and some magnetic hematite beads for good measure and created a bracelet to wear on my left arm. I wore both all night and today. My elbow barely gives a twinge now. Whether its the amber, the hematite or both together I don’t know, but the pain is going away! I have not taken any OTC pain medicine either.
