When I was asked to review “The Holistic Mama’s Guide to Homemade Skin Care” I was so excited! Roxanne, the author of The Holistic Mama Blog, is a huge proponent of natural living, whole food, and making everything from scratch.

You know I could not wait to get my hands on her book!

This is a simple, easy to use, and comprehensive guide to homemade skin care, first discussing how your diet can effect your skin, moving on to lifestyle, then she shares some awesome recipes for homemade skin care. I love this because any “main stream” skin care system you will find does not care what you eat, how often you sleep, or what you do to relax and reduce stress. Roxanne really hits the nail on the head focusing on your lifestyle choices before even discussing the recipes.

And the skin care recipes! I love them.

She discusses oil cleansing method in a simple, easy to understand way making the reader comfortable with the idea of putting oil right on their face for clean and healthy skin! You know how much I love OCM.

I appreciate all of her recipes being in small, easy to use proportions so you will not end up with half a years worth of lotion. You will have about two weeks to a months worth, which is perfect. You will be using fresh, healthy, natural ingredients on your skin year round at a fragment of the cost!

This will save you so much money since you will be making your own skincare instead of buying the expensive organic store brands, that still contain questionable ingredients.

She also uses ingredients that you probably already have in your home making these recipes easy, accessible, and affordable. Oh and did I mention THEY WORK!

This is the table of contents for the book. As you can see there is a lot of great information, and you know you already want to try out some of these recipes.

I have always had issues making lip balm. I have never once found a recipe that WORKS without being too hard, or too soft. Pintrest has failed me on this front and I couldn’t be more sad.  I decided to try her Cocoa Butter & Mint Lip Balm Recipe and LOVE IT.

I had to sub Shea Butter for cocoa butter since I am out of cocoa butter currently but it worked just fine.

Cocoa Butter and Mint Lip Balm

Recipe Type: Lip Balm
Author: Roxanne King – The Holistic Mama
Prep time:
Total time:
This recipe is directly from Roxanne King’s book “The Holistic Mama’s Guide to Homemade Skincare
Ingredients
  • 1 tbsp. coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp. beeswax
  • 1 tbsp. cocoa butter
  • 4 drops peppermint oil
Instructions
  1. In a double boiler melt all oils on low heat (except essential oils) together until well blended. Remove from heat, add essential oils and stir. Pour into lip balm tubes or tins. Place the tubes in the refrigerator or freezer for 15 minutes to set before capping.

Finally! A lip balm recipe that works!

My only issue with these recipes is that I measure my beeswax and butters in ounces not tbsp so I had a bit of an issue trying to figure out how much a tbsp of bees wax and shea butter weigh.

Where can I buy it?

I know you are dying to get your hands on this amazing book and all of these great tried and true recipes so that you can get started making your own, customized natural skin care at home. There are over 20 recipes in the book and all of them take 30 minutes or less to make using ingredients you probably already own. Try mixing your own natural skin care items! A teaspoon of sugar and a half teaspoon of olive oil make a delightful sugar scrub for your lips. You can even use this mixture to exfoliate and soften rough skin on your feet, knees and elbows. It’s inexpensive and entirely free of dangerous preservatives.
